Here are some German words that sound/look like English words, but do mean quite something else (those words are called false friends).

after = der After (anus)
also = also (therefore)
bald = bald (soon)
blaze = die blase (bladder, blister)
brief = der Brief (letter)
chef = der Chef (boss)
kind = das Kind(child)

Beware of those false friends or you might loose some real friends .-)

Why would I say "Toll!" to mean Super! and can I also just say "Super" to mean the same thing?

Karen, they do mean the same thing. I do not feel that they are used differently and I probably use them 50/50.

Der Superlativ ist in der Sprachwissenschaft die Steigerung von Adjektiven und Adverbien.

Here is a sentence:
Das Wetter ist schön.
And here are two ways to express the Superlativ:
Das Wetter ist heute schöner als Gestern. (more nice)
Das Wetter ist heute am Schönsten! (it could not be better)

Unregelmäßige Steigerungen sind Adjektive, die von der oben genannten Regel abweichen. Unregelmäßig sind

gut – besser – (am) beste(n)
viel – mehr – (am) meiste(n)
gerne – lieber – (am) liebste(n)
hoch – höher – (am) höchste(n)
wenig – weniger/minder – (am) wenigste(n)/(am) mindeste(n) (beide Formen möglich)

Ich spreche gut Englisch.
Du sprichts besser Englisch als ich.
Hans spricht am besten Englisch.
Or, to turn it around:
Du sprichst weniger gut Englisch als Hans.
Ich spreche am wenigsten gut Englisch.

I have a question: if I say "Ja, gerne" could I also say "Ja, bitte" and have the same meaning?

Okay Karen, thanks for this interesting question.
The answer is: yes.

If somebody is offering you coffe than both answers will fill your cup.

“Nimmst Du noch etwas Kaffee?”

„Ja, gerne / bitte“ or you could just say „gerne“ or „bitte“. All the same.

If you go into a shop and somebody is offering you help:

“Guten Tag, kann ich Ihnen helfen?”

Again, you can say any of the above and will receive help.

Die englischen Personalpronomen folgen seinen germanischen Wurzeln, obwohl die Sprache selbst für die Nomen keine Deklination mehr enthält. In der ersten Person singular und plural existieren so zwei Pronomen zum Ersatz von Subjekt und Objekt (I, me und we, us), und die dritte Personen singular ist getrennt nach Geschlecht und Sachbezug (he, she, it). Eine Sonderform ist die Möglichkeit, bei unbekannten Geschlecht die belebte dritte Person plural einzusetzen. ('"If somebody took my book, they'd better give it back" = "Falls jemand mein Buch genommen hat, so sollten er oder sie es zurückgeben").

We already talked about this topic in the Podcast but here it is again for those who did not listen to all episodes:
We usually "Siezen" people (grown ups) we do not know:
Wie heissen Sie?
Kann ich Ihnen helfen?
Was kann ich für Sie tun?

There are, however, many areas where we use the informal ("Dutzen") version (in sport clubs, at universities, in the mountains, etc.):
Wie heisst Du?
Kann ich Dir helfen?
Was kann ich für Dich tun?

In general I try to avoid it and let the other person choose how to address me if he/she is older than me. With people I guess to be below 30 I usually just use the informal version (if I am not in a bank that is). This is widely accepted nowadays and maybe I have been too long at a university .-)

So, in my opinion, no. I think that we always "measure" the Blutdruck, not "take" it. We do, however, take blood.

Paul send me a sentence he found usefull when he was in Germany:

"I travelled to Germany twice in 2007. I’m at the stage where I can sometimes understand, but I don’t really speak at all. I found this little phrase was good to use when people spoke to me and in German and I could understand a little, “Ich lerne Deutsch, aber ich spreche nicht sehr gut“.

People were impressed and usually responded with “Doch!” Then when I continued I think they came to realise how badly I speak. Nevertheless it was a good ice breaker and indicated that at least I was trying to learn the language.

2008/01/08 - Idiom of the Day: "It’s raining cats and dogs"

When it rains very strongly we say :
"Es kübelt aus Eimern."
or we might say:
"Es schüttet aus Eimern."
The meaning is the same, "kübelt" is probably more common in the north of Germany.

Ausverkauf = closing sale, sale

Though the Swiss are very discreet in everything and tend to understate everything, when they have Ausverkauf, they really push it. The city is full of large, red signs "Ausverkauf" or sometimes "Sale" and often large percentage sales ("50%").
This might be a sale off at the end of the season, but some shops seem to have those signs on all year long. Especially in the tourist areas, so you might want to compare prices, despite the red signs.
