2008/01/30 - Achtung vor Falschen Freunden

Here are some German words that sound/look like English words, but do mean quite something else (those words are called false friends).

after = der After (anus)
also = also (therefore)
bald = bald (soon)
blaze = die blase (bladder, blister)
brief = der Brief (letter)
chef = der Chef (boss)
kind = das Kind(child)

Beware of those false friends or you might loose some real friends .-)

Two more:
fast = nearly
gift = das Gift = poison

This last one is particularly hilarious because you'll find several faux German stores in the US labeled as a "Gift Haus"!

Good advice to avoid foot-in-mouth, thanks. I like your blog and podcasts, and one a week is great.
More stories about hiking, cycling and climbing in beautiful places please :)

I just discovered your podcast and I'm very excited to catch up those. Thanks again for creating a free podcast to teach German.
